Embark on the ultimate Himalayan experience with the Ama Dablam Expedition, a prestigious and world-famous climb in Nepal's Everest (Khumbu) region, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. Ama Dablam is 6,812 meters (22,349 feet) tall and is one of the most distinctive peaks in Nepal, famous for its spectacular pyramid-like shape and extremely steep, exposed ridges. Situated in the Solukhumbu District in Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mountain is southeast of Mount Everest and an ever-present point of interest to trekkers on the Everest Base Camp trail.
Ama Dablam Climbing is a committed alpine endeavor, and it is most appropriate for experienced mountaineers with prior high-altitude and technical climbing background. The ascent necessitates proficiency in rock, ice, and mixed climbing and consists of fixed ropes, knife-edged ridges, and extended exposure. Not quite as high as the 8,000-meter giants, Ama Dablam's technicality gives it a standing as one of the most respected peaks in the Himalaya.
Apart from the physical challenge, Ama Dablam offers unmatched rewards. Panoramic summit views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other Himalayan giants reward the climber. The expedition also offers deep cultural immersion, with visits to Sherpa villages like Namche and Pangboche, trips to ancient monasteries, and a real sense of connection with indigenous peoples. Every moment of the expedition is imbued with natural beauty and cultural significance.
The mountain's name, "Ama Dablam," means "Mother's Necklace" in the Sherpa language. The hanging glacier on its southwest face resembles the traditional pendant worn by Sherpa women, and it is from this that the mountain gets its poetic name. It was first ascended in 1961 by an international team, and the standard route remains the classic Southwest Ridge.
Sole Encounters Trekking offers a carefully organized Ama Dablam Expedition with a strong focus on safety, acclimatization, and personalized service. If you’re seeking a technically challenging yet deeply rewarding Himalayan climb, this is your chance to stand atop one of the region’s most beautiful and revered peaks. Contact us today to start planning your Ama Dablam adventure.
The best season for the Ama Dablam Expedition is during the spring (April to May) and autumn (late September to November). These periods offer stable weather, clear skies, and mild temperatures, ideal for climbing and enjoying mountain views. Avoid the monsoon season (June to August) due to heavy rainfall and unsafe conditions. For a safe and successful expedition, choose either spring or autumn.
During the Ama Dablam Expedition, accommodations mainly consist of tented camps set up at various base camp locations along the route. The expedition team provides comfortable and well-equipped tents with sleeping bags, mattresses, and dining facilities. At higher altitudes, climbers stay in high-altitude camps equipped with necessary gear and supplies. Base camp life offers a supportive environment with meals prepared by expedition cooks. The focus is on providing a safe and comfortable setting for climbers to rest and prepare for summit attempts amidst the challenging alpine environment of Ama Dablam.
During the Ama Dablam Expedition, meals are provided by experienced expedition cooks at base camps and high-altitude camps. The meals are designed to provide ample nutrition and energy for climbers, with a focus on high-calorie and easily digestible foods. Typical meals include a variety of dishes such as pasta, rice, soups, vegetables, and meats (when available), supplemented with snacks and hot beverages. Special dietary preferences or requirements can often be accommodated with prior notice. The meals are essential for sustaining climbers during their ascent and descent on Ama Dablam.
Transportation services for the Ama Dablam Expedition typically involve a combination of flights and ground transportation. The expedition begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, followed by a trek to reach the base camp of Ama Dablam. Porters and yaks may be used to transport expedition equipment and supplies along the trekking route. Once the expedition concludes, climbers return to Kathmandu via the same route, including a flight from Lukla. Expedition organizers arrange all necessary transportation logistics to ensure a smooth journey to and from the mountain.
For the Ama Dablam Expedition, experienced climbing guides and Sherpa support teams are essential for safety and success. Climbing guides are trained and knowledgeable about the route, technical climbing skills, and high-altitude safety protocols. Sherpa porters play a crucial role in transporting expedition equipment, setting up camps, and assisting climbers during the ascent. Their expertise and local knowledge are invaluable for navigating the challenging terrain of Ama Dablam and ensuring a well-supported expedition experience.
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Sole Encounters Adventures will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. You'll meet your guide for a trip briefing, gear check, and final preparations, followed by a welcome dinner in the evening.

Today, after breakfast, meet your city guide for a short cultural tour. Visit Bhaktapur and the sacred Pashupatinath Temple. Afterward, drive about 6 hours (132 km / 82 miles) to Manthali in Ramechhap District. During peak trekking seasons, Lukla flights operate from Manthali due to congestion at Kathmandu Airport.
If you need to store any extra luggage, please ask. Your hotel in Kathmandu offers free storage. Before leaving, make sure you're carrying everything needed for the trek and expedition as you will not return to Kathmandu until the end. Overnight in Manthali. Get ready for tomorrow’s exciting flight to Lukla.
Today, take an early morning flight from Ramechhap to Lukla, weather permitting. Mountain flights can be delayed or canceled due to conditions. If needed, we’ll stay in touch and can arrange a backup helicopter to Lukla at extra cost.
After landing in Lukla, meet your trekking crew and begin the 4-hour hike to Phakding, covering about 7-8 km. The trail is mostly gentle with a mix of short climbs, flat paths, and suspension bridge crossings, passing through small Sherpa villages and scenic valleys.
Phakding is a riverside village surrounded by pine forests and hills. It offers a peaceful start to the journey. Overnight at a teahouse.
Today’s trek takes about 6 hours, covering around 11-13 km. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, with several suspension bridge crossings and a steep climb after lunch in Jorsalle. You'll pass through Monjo and enter Sagarmatha National Park along the way.
Arrive in Namche Bazaar, the main Sherpa town and trading center of the Khumbu region. Once a stop on ancient trade routes, Namche now offers cafes, bakeries, gear shops, museums, and ATMs. Spend two nights here for acclimatization and explore local viewpoints, monasteries, and cultural sites. Overnight at a teahouse.
Today is a rest and acclimatization day, but you’ll enjoy a 4-5 hour hike to higher elevations for better acclimatization. The hike includes a visit to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m) for panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam, along with a stop at Khunde and Khumjung villages to explore the famous Hillary School and local monasteries. After returning to Namche Bazaar, you’ll have time to relax, explore the town, and chat with your guide about the upcoming trek. Overnight at a teahouse.
Today’s trek covers about 11 km and takes 6 hours. The trail begins with a gentle walk along a scenic ridge with views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam, then descends to the Dudh Koshi River at Phunki Tenga, where you'll stop for lunch. From there, a steady uphill climb through pine and rhododendron forests leads to Tengboche.
In the afternoon, visit the historic Tengboche Monastery, founded in 1916 and rebuilt after earthquake and fire damage. It is the spiritual center of the Khumbu region. The entrance fee is NPR 300 per person, supporting local communities and monastery renovations. If timing allows, attend the afternoon prayer ceremony. The monastery is also known for hosting Mani Rimdu, a major Sherpa festival celebrated with sacred dances each autumn. Overnight at a teahouse in Tengboche.
Today’s trek is a short and pleasant walk of about 3 km, taking 2–3 hours. The trail gradually climbs through alpine forest with stunning views of Ama Dablam. You’ll reach Pangboche by lunchtime.
In the afternoon, explore Upper Pangboche, home to one of the oldest monasteries in the Khumbu region, believed to date back over 300 years. The area offers great short hikes and viewpoints, along with insight into Sherpa spiritual life. Rest well and get ready for the trek to Ama Dablam Base Camp tomorrow. Overnight at a teahouse.
Today’s trek covers about 5-6 km and takes 4-5 hours, gradually climbing through open alpine meadows with great views of Ama Dablam and surrounding peaks.
At base camp, settle into your tented camp and meet the climbing crew. This peaceful spot has served as the starting point for climbers since the first ascent in 1961. Spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the expedition ahead.
Today is a rest and acclimatization day. Your guide will lead a short hike to nearby ridges for better altitude adjustment, then return to base camp.
Enjoy stunning mountain views and relax at the tented camp. All meals are provided by the camping crew, and the afternoon is free to rest, prepare gear, and review climbing plans.
Today is a full technical training day at base camp. Before the session, your guide will explain what gear to carry, such as your harness, helmet, jumar, descender, carabiners, and gloves. The training covers how to use fixed lines, practice traverses, and apply essential climbing and safety techniques on snow, ice, and rock terrain.
Your guide will also go over important safety protocols, including clipping correctly, maintaining proper spacing, and using the rope system efficiently on exposed sections.
After training, return to the tented camp for rest and review. All meals are provided by the camp crew.
Today’s climb covers about 3-4 km and takes 4-5 hours. You’ll ascend slowly from base camp over grassy ridges and rocky terrain. Your guide will advise what to carry, including essential gear, layers, and water.
Along the route, you’ll begin using fixed ropes and follow key safety protocols. The final stretch to Camp 1 is steeper, but the effort is rewarded with stunning views of the summit ridge.
Settle into your tented camp at Camp 1. All meals are provided by the camp crew. Rest and get ready for the next climb.
Today’s climb to Camp 2 is part of your acclimatization process, helping your body adjust to higher altitude before the summit push. The route covers about 1.5-2 km and takes 4 hours, involving technical sections with fixed ropes, steep rock faces, and exposed ridgelines.
After reaching Camp 2 and taking a short break, descend safely back to Camp 1. This up-and-down movement is key for proper acclimatization. All meals are provided by the camp crew. Rest well for the next stage.
.
Today is a rest and prep day at Camp 1. Take time to recover, rehydrate, and discuss the plan for Camp 2 with your guide. Check your gear, stay warm, and keep your energy up.
You can also enjoy light exploration around camp and spend time with the crew for some simple entertainment and conversation. All meals provided by the camp team. Rest well for the climb ahead.
Today, start with a 3-4 hour climb from base camp to Camp 1. After a short rest and lunch, continue to Camp 2, which takes another 3–4 hours over a 1.5 km stretch. The trail is steep, technical, and exposed, with fixed ropes and narrow ridges.
Go slowly, check weather conditions, and always follow your guide’s instructions. Support each other and use all safety protocols. The route offers stunning views of Ama Dablam’s summit, the hanging glacier (Dablam), and the surrounding peaks.
Camp 2 is perched on a narrow rocky platform, offering incredible views but very limited space. Despite its dramatic position, it is secure with fixed anchors, and your team will help set up safe tent placements. Rest and hydrate. All meals provided by the camp crew.
Today is the big summit push. Start early around 1 to 2 AM for a climb that takes 8 to 10 hours to the summit and another 4 to 5 hours to descend back to Camp 1. The route is steep and technical with rock, snow, and ice sections, including the Yellow Tower, Mushroom Ridge, and exposed ridgelines. Total distance is around 3 to 4 km round trip, but the altitude and terrain make it very challenging.
Climb slowly and carefully, stay close to your guide and team, and support each other throughout. Your Sherpa guides will assist you with gear, fixed ropes, and safety at every stage. Carry only essentials like water, snacks, warm layers, and a headlamp.
If weather changes or the trail is difficult due to heavy snow or unclear paths, do not worry. We have extra days in the itinerary for safety and flexibility. Focus on your health and teamwork. After reaching the summit of Ama Dablam, enjoy the incredible views before carefully descending to Camp 1. Meals will be provided by the camp crew.
These contingency days are built into the itinerary to allow flexibility and safety during the climb. In the high Himalayas, weather conditions can change quickly, and summit attempts may need to be delayed due to strong winds, snowfall, or poor visibility.
Contingency days also help if the team needs extra rest for acclimatization, or if any section of the route requires additional time due to trail conditions or health concerns. These days ensure that your expedition has the best chance of success without rushing or compromising safety.
If everything goes smoothly and the summit is reached as planned, these days can be used to rest or descend at a comfortable pace.

If you’d like to buy food or drinks for the team or offer tips, this is a good time. Enjoy your last night in the mountains with warm memories and new friendships. Ama Dablam is one of Nepal’s most iconic and visually stunning peaks, rising to 6,812 meters (22,349 feet) in the heart of the Khumbu region, southeast of Mount Everest. The name translates to “Mother’s Necklace” in the Sherpa language, inspired by the glacier hanging from its southwest face that resembles a traditional pendant worn by Sherpa women.
Famous for its pyramid-like shape and dramatic ridgelines, Ama Dablam is not just a breathtaking sight on the Everest Base Camp trail but also one of the most technically demanding peaks below 7,000 meters. It attracts climbers from around the world seeking a serious alpine challenge involving rock, ice, and mixed climbing.
The Ama Dablam Expedition is a 24-day journey that includes cultural immersion in Kathmandu, a scenic flight to Lukla, trekking through Sherpa villages, acclimatization days, and a multi-day summit push supported by experienced guides and Sherpas. This expedition offers a perfect blend of high-altitude adventure, Himalayan culture, and unforgettable views.
Ama Dablam is a technically challenging climb. It involves rock, ice, and mixed climbing, including vertical sections, exposed ridges, and fixed rope ascents. This expedition is recommended for experienced climbers with solid mountaineering skills.
Yes. Prior experience with technical climbing above 5,800 meters is strongly recommended. You should be familiar with using crampons, ascenders, and fixed ropes, and be physically and mentally prepared for high-altitude conditions.
You will need:
Ama Dablam climbing permit
Sagarmatha National Park entry permit
TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card
All permits are arranged by Sole Encounters Adventures.
Yes. The expedition reaches extreme altitudes above 6,000 meters. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and health monitoring are essential. Our team conducts daily oxygen saturation checks and keeps emergency oxygen and evacuation support ready.
Yes, fixed ropes are placed on Ama Dablam to ensure climber safety, especially on the steep and technical sections between Camp 1, Camp 2, and the summit along the Southwest Ridge. These ropes help manage the mountain’s mixed terrain of rock, snow, and ice, and are critical for maintaining secure movement in exposed areas.
The ropes are installed and maintained by professional Sherpa teams ahead of the summit rotation. Each climber is required to use proper safety gear, including a harness, helmet, ascender (jumar), carabiners, and belay devices. Before climbing, your guide will check that all equipment is properly fitted and that each team member understands how to use the fixed lines correctly.
To prioritize safety during the climb:
Daily gear and weather checks are conducted.
Climbing Sherpas offer 1:1 support, especially on summit day.
The team follows a strict protocol to reduce crowding on fixed lines and manage risk in case of sudden weather changes.
These safety measures make it possible for well-prepared climbers to attempt this technical peak with the support and protection needed for a successful expedition.
For the Ama Dablam Expedition (24 Days), you will need a full set of trekking gear, expedition clothing, climbing equipment, and personal essentials. I had dreamt of conquering Amadablam for years, and thanks to the support of an excellent trekking company, it became a reality. The guides were friendly and approachable, always ready to assist us. However, it seemed like the company was running multiple groups simultaneously, which sometimes caused delays in our schedule."
With Sole Encounters Trekking: "Turning my long-held dream into reality, I successfully summited Amadablam with the incredible support of Sole Encounters Trekking. The friendly and approachable guides made the challenging trek more enjoyable, providing us with the necessary assistance at every turn. While the company's popularity led to the operation of multiple groups simultaneously, it did, on occasion, cause slight delays in our schedule. Despite that, the journey was a remarkable achievement, and I couldn't be happier with the experience!"

20th May, 2023
Our dream of conquering Amadablam finally came true, and it was all thanks to the incredibly helpful and well-organized local-based company we chose for this adventure. Opting to book directly with them was a decision we cherished, knowing that our contribution would directly support local communities rather than going through an overseas company.
Upon our arrival in Kathmandu, the company's representative warmly welcomed us and escorted us to our hotel. We were thrilled to meet our guide, who greeted us with a beaming smile and took the time to show us around the vibrant Thamel area, making sure we had everything we needed. Later, he briefed us thoroughly about the upcoming Amadablam expedition. The dinner that followed was perfect, and the next day allowed us some free time to explore the city's monuments while also preparing for the upcoming adventure.
Throughout the journey, our trek guide and porter were exceptionally helpful and enthusiastic, providing unwavering support. The expedition, though challenging, was flawlessly executed, thanks to the professional and experienced guide they provided us. His extensive experience, including climbing Everest, gave us tremendous confidence.
Overall, the trip was nothing short of brilliant, and we are immensely grateful to the company for making our dream come true. We genuinely hope to return for more adventures with them in the future!
